10 years after HK being returned to P.R.China, most local Hong Kong people still don't speak Mandarin, which across the river the other 1.3 bln people are speaking. Those security guys (as well as door men) downstairs open the door for me everyday, which is nice, and smile to me. But I always have a big problem whenever trying to ask them any questions. A few minutes ago I just tried to ask them where the gym was and how late they are still open. Mandarin, no, they don't understand, nor speak it. English, no, they asked me to speak English, but when I started, he just kept saying what he thought I might be asking...this is not about him. It's just me who felt frustrating while not being able to communicate in my own country and my own apartment building.

I am not saying they should speak English, although in the last 100 years colonized by the British, these amazing Cantonese people didn't seem to care (then why should I?). Don't take this wrong. I respect the local culture and try to adapt well, as I did when I first moved to the states 5 years ago. But anything is not one-side. This city, at least, should realize the common language of this country, is Mandarin, and English for the world (no offense, French!), and try to fit itself into the world, while maintaining its own dialect and identity.

Also, i have to admit I didn't try hard to learn the local language as I don't consider it a beautiful or necessary language. People look like they are arguing with each other when they talk, and many regular words they use are disgusting. Uhm...maybe I will change if I run into a nice local guy.
