Hangzhou vs. Hong Kong
Both are rich. Zhejiang province is the richest province in China since a thousand years ago and all its capital concentrates in Hangzhou. HK is a tax heaven for the richest people in the world. Both are friendly, probably the two most friendly cities in China (if you don't think HK is friendly, it's because you never tried the mainland!). One big difference, Hangzhou people don't read One Weekly (壹周刊). They have much better newspapers and magazines. I randomly picked up a newspaper in hangzhou and it talked about J.D. Salinger for two whole pages and listed links to his short story collection. How helpful is that?! Metro HK is the worst Metro among all...never a single article in depth. Metro Boston is bad as well but they still have some obnoxious comments that make you hate or laugh at them (but still, they have their own views!). I know it's a free newspaper and all but cannot they just be more professional?

I grew up watching Cantonese movies and reading Louis Cha's Kung Fu novels. They were funny and stroies were well told. Plus, cinematography was so much better than any Chinese movie back then. And now, who still watch Catonese movies except the local crowd? The government talks about getting Shenzhen kids to come to HK schools "to attract more talents" and flying police to Canada to investigate Edison Chen. Oh, well, maybe they can invest more in local art and design, especially media to restore HK's cultural charm.
